Last night (Sunday 30 July) West Suffolk Conservative Association selected Nick Timothy, Daily Telegraph columnist and former Downing Street chief of staff, as the prospective parliamentary candidate to fight the next general election campaign.
Following the declaration of the result, Rachel Hood, the West Suffolk Conservative Association chair, explained that it had been a “rigorous, open and transparent process”, and said:
“We had a very high calibre shortlist of candidates, and we are extremely grateful to everybody who put themselves forward for selection. The association is delighted to have adopted Nick Timothy as our Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.”
Nick Timothy said:
“West Suffolk is a wonderful place – a place I have known and loved my whole life. And it is an honour to be selected here as the prospective Conservative candidate for the next general election.
“In the coming months I will be getting around the constituency, introducing myself and listening to people about their hopes and concerns for the future. My promise is to work tirelessly for you and to give you the voice you need to be heard in government – so things are done in your interests.
“We have many and varied communities here across the towns and villages of West Suffolk, but what unites them is the need to preserve and enhance the quality of life in this unique place. As your Conservative candidate, that is what I will strive to do.”

Nick has extensive family ties to the constituency. His parents live in Hundon, he had family in the Newmarket area for many years, and his aunt married a US pilot based at RAF Mildenhall.
More than 100 potential candidates applied for vacancy. Eight were invited to present to the association executive on Sunday, and four made it to the final round, where they presented to association members and took questions.
The event was moderated by Lord (Robert) Hayward, former Conservative MP.
